Nickel-metal-hydride batteries are rechargeable batteries whose performance lies between that of traditional nickel-cadmium batteries (Ni-Cd) and modern lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion). The active material of its positive electrode is nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH), and the active material of its negative electrode is Metal Hydride.

Advantages

High energy density

Its energy density is approximately 30-40% higher (volume energy density) or even higher (weight energy density) than that of its predecessor, the nickel-cadmium battery. This means that under the same volume or weight, it can store more electricity.

No memory effect

Compared with nickel-cadmium batteries, the memory effect of nickel-metal-hydride batteries is very slight and can almost be ignored. Compared with lithium-ion batteries, the electrolyte of nickel-metal-hydride batteries is a water solution (potassium hydroxide), which is less flammable and explosive, has stronger resistance to overcharging and overdischarging, a wider operating temperature range, and higher safety.
